Hello,

Our daughter, Brittney, passed away in August, of 2001. The story of her death is known by many of you. She had been at summer camp for 8 weeks. One day after her return, she had a headache all day.  Some extremely unusual symptoms started to appear, which prompted us to go to the E.R.  Many tests were run. The final diagnosis was viral encephalitis. There is no known reason why she contracted this virus and there is no known cure. That night our world changed forever.

Brittney was a sweet, caring, enthusiastic young lady who led by example. She had earned 3 varsity letters, and was determined to stay ranked at the top of her class as the senior she was about to become.  Her fighting spirit and dedication to excellence continue to inspire us on a daily basis.

The fear of any parent who has lost a child is that the child will be forgotten. Time does not heal this. Things change, but, there is nothing to refill the hole in our hearts.  We never imagined over 2000 former, current and future Nicolet students, faculty, staff and friends would compete on this day year after year.  This continued support would not be possible without our and Brittney’s core group of friends who have had our backs since that August day, and also the many new friends and acquaintances we have gained along the way.  This support has enabled our committee to award over $140,000.00 to graduating seniors from our ‘Brittney Gigl Memorial Scholarship Fund’ since its inception in 2002.  The dedication of teacher, coach, and friend Dann Jacobson, and his student committee has been the engine behind the success of this scholarship.

Our hope is to continue to keep our daughter’s memory alive.  On April 5th, 2020, in an effort to raise funds for her scholarship, Nicolet will host the nineteenth annual “BG 3v3 Basketball Tournament”.  It is a day filled with fun, food, raffles and basketball.  Even if you have never touched a basketball in your life, it is just a special day to be a part of.   All donations go directly to the scholarship fund.  Again, we cannot thank you enough for your overwhelming kindness and generosity over the years and may all your days be filled with peace and love!

Very sincerely yours,

Marta and Bob Gigl
